Bartonella: is your family at risk?

Bartonella is the bacteria that causes Cat Scratch Disease in people. It is a zoonotic, which means that it can be spread from animals to people. Up to 22% of healthy cats carry this bacteria, and it has been associated with numerous diseases in cats and humans.

Bartonella is transmitted through either a bite or scratch from an infected cat, or the bite of an insect such as a flea or tick. For this reason we strongly recommend the use of a quality flea and tick control product to reduce the risk of exposure to your pets.

The following are some of the Bartonella associated diseases:

CATS
Gingivitis
Stomatitis
Conjunctivitis
Chronic vomiting / diarrhea
Upper respiratory infections
Inflammatory bowel disease

HUMANS
Inflammatory bowel disease
Cat scratch disease
Enlarged lymph nodes
Uveitis
Skin rash / irritation
Endocarditis
Joint pain
Mononucleosis-like syndrome

We have adopted the following recommendations:
Test all cats that were strays or were adopted from a shelter or rescue organization, and those showing suspicious symptoms. Institute rigorous flea & tick control. Test all cats in a multicat household when a cat is found to be infected with Bartonella. Treat infected cats.
